Peterborough to Gannon Narrows

We arrived at lock 20 just after 8:40am hoping to get the first lock through heading north. Marc and Shelley of Rock Chalk as well as a couple jetskiing to Bobcaygeon for the night were in the lock with us. Since we were the only boaters heading north from lock 20 and there were no other boaters at lock 21. We proceeded directly into the pan lift on our starboard side.  We made it to the Peterborough lift earlier than we expected. We were at the top of the lock before 10:00am.

We all enjoyed our quick lift up 65 feet in the air. The view is beautiful up top. We exit the pan and are off towards lock 22.

After lock 26 we are out  in Lake Katchewanooka. The homes along the lake are beautiful.

Rocks are now starting to be apart of our landscape.

We made it to Young's Point, lock 27.

Rock Chalk exiting lock 27.

We are now in Clear Lake.

The Kawartha Lakes are full of small inhabited islands.

This church is on a very large rock.

Hell's Gate, the name is scarier than journey. Not the same as Hell's Gate in New York City.

As we are entering Fairy Lake we see the gorgeous boat pictured below. We had a chance to talk to the owners while waiting our turn for lock 28 at Burleigh Falls.

"Nan" built in 1941.

Some of you may recognize this boat from the movie Absence of Malice staring Sally Fields and Paul Newman back in 1980. We had fun cruising and talking with owners, Ian and Ngaire, who are from New Zealand. The current owners have enjoyed cruising on her for the last 26 years.

As we approached Berleigh Falls. We had a traffic jam. The light was green as we approached and turned red as soon as we entered the high walls of the lock. The lockmaster radioed for us to go to the blue line.  We were no longer traveling with Rock Chalk due to a full lock. We put ourselves at the end of the blue line since Nan was told to go to the blue line as well. Nan had to back out of the very narrow channel  to get to the blue line. Andrew and Sabastian helped walk their boat back to the blue line. Since we had time and the day was hot. Andrew and the kids jumped in the water for a quick dip.

I drove us into this lock and was nervous pulling up beside Nan. I needed more practice on close maneuvering, it is not my favorite.  I did a good job and feel better about my driving skills every day. We had a few feet between us when we were attached to the wall. All goes well and we exit the lock and head out for Buckhorn. We know the lock wall is already full at the top.

Nan is at the last spot on the blue line at Buckhorn . Block Chalk made it through Burleigh Falls before us and found a spot on the upper wall of Buckhorn and was saving us a spot. Marc turned his back and a houseboat crept in. Oh well, it is first come first serve. I chatted with the lockmaster asking where we could stop for the night and he said a local favorite is Gannon Narrows between Buckhorn Lake and Pigeon Lake due to the sandy bottom. Most of the lake has a rocky bottom. Another ten miles at this point was no biggie. We wanted to call it a day. A peaceful anchorage always makes up for a long day.

We finally dropped anchor at 6:30pm at Gannon Narrows. Our views for the night. It was peaceful and quiet. The kids enjoyed swimming in the warm water. Our water temp reading was at 84 degrees!
