On Saturday February 19th we woke up to gorgeous weather and decided to meander around the waterways. We headed down the Cooper River towards the point and then up the Ashley River to see the other side of Charleston by water. After we did some cruising around the city we decided to head north, up the ICW towards the Island of Palm. We knew that there was a restaurant/marina at IOP (Island of Palm). By the time we made it to IOP the waterways were full of boater and to make things more challenging we were heading north during low tide. The day was gorgeous and we had to wait a while before we could eat lunch, but that was ok with us since the tide was still going down. As you see from the pictures the tide was one foot below normal due to a full moon. After lunch we headed over to the marine store and picked up some bait so we could do a bit of fishing in one of the creeks off the ICW. After several attempts of setting our anchor it finally took hold. Andrew and the kids started fishing. The currents were pretty strong in the creek that we pick so fishing wasn't so good, but we did find some yellow Sea Whip. I woke up around 6:00am to find that our anchor somehow pulled loose during the night. We are pretty sure it was due to the rising high tide which was 8 feet higher low tide. I also awoke to 25 knot winds in an ENE direction. We were fighting the tide and waves all the way back to the marina. The current at Charleston Maritime Center is wicked fast and swirls constantly. One has to fully commit to docking or being able to bail out at the right time. To avoid hitting other boats we decided to dock at the fuel pier and wait for the winds to calm down which happened around 2:00pm. |
